“The Mui Ne sand dunes” means two separate places. The red dunes sit beside the road into Mui Ne, a few minutes from the hotels, and are small, soft and orange. The white dunes of Bau Trang lie about 30 km further north-east: far larger, pale cream, with freshwater lakes at their foot and a jeep or ATV to reach the high ridges.
Most visitors see both in one outing, usually with the fishing village and Fairy Stream on the same road. The deciding factor is not which dunes but which hour: early morning or the last two hours before sunset. Between about 10:00 and 15:00 the sand is hot and the light is flat.

When to go: the hour matters more than the month
Mui Ne is one of the driest corners of Vietnam. November to April is the dry season, with a steady north-east wind that keeps the dunes cool and reshapes the ripples every day. From May to October short afternoon showers are possible, and the lotus flowers on the lakes at Bau Trang are out from roughly April to July.
The sun rises at about 05:25 in June and 06:10 in January, and sets between about 17:25 in December and 18:10 in June. Sunrise at the white dunes therefore means leaving Mui Ne around 04:30. The alternative most people prefer is the last light: reach Bau Trang about 90 minutes before sunset and stay until the sand turns gold.
What the middle of the day is like
The sand heats quickly, the glare off the white dunes is hard on the eyes, and photographs look flat. If your plan puts you on the dunes at noon, move the dunes and do something else then: Fairy Stream, lunch or the drive.
Getting there and getting around
Mui Ne is about 200 km east of Ho Chi Minh City, roughly three hours by car on the expressway that opened in 2023, or four to six hours by bus. There is no commercial airport yet: the civil terminal at Phan Thiet was still under construction in September 2026.
Once there, the red dunes are an easy Grab or taxi ride. The white dunes are harder: 30 km of coast road, and at Bau Trang itself the high ridges are reached by jeep or ATV rather than on foot. A shared jeep tour from Mui Ne costs very little and covers both dune fields, the fishing village and Fairy Stream in about four and a half hours.
What a private day adds
The dunes do not change if you go privately. What changes is the timing and the explanation. Shared tours run at fixed hours, often a 04:30 pickup or an afternoon slot, and you share the jeep with strangers and a driver rather than a guide. On a private day your guide plans the order around the light, and the stops beyond the dunes — Ta Cu Mountain, the Po Sah Inu towers, a fish sauce house — fit into the same day.

Are the Mui Ne sand dunes worth visiting?
Yes, if you go early or late. The white dunes at Bau Trang are the closest thing Vietnam has to a desert landscape; the red dunes are small but fun. At midday both are hot and much less rewarding.
How far are the white dunes from Mui Ne?
About 30 km north-east, around 40 minutes by road. From central Phan Thiet it is closer to 65 km, a little over an hour.
Can you walk up the white dunes?
You can walk the lower slopes, but the high ridges are a long way over soft sand. Most visitors take the jeep to the top or an ATV.
Do I need a tour?
No. Grab reaches the red dunes and Fairy Stream easily. A tour, shared or private, mainly solves the 30 km to Bau Trang and the transport on the dunes themselves.
