Hundreds of boats ride at anchor in the bay, and round basket boats ferry the night’s catch to the sand, where it is sorted and sold before the heat arrives. Your guide walks you down among the baskets and explains what is being landed, who buys it and how a fishing family’s day is split between sea and shore.

Three brick towers on a hill above the sea, built by the Cham around the ninth century, the tallest dedicated to Shiva. They are small and quickly photographed; the reason to come with a guide is the story of the kingdom that ruled this coast before the Vietnamese, and of the Cham families who still gather here for the Kate festival.

Phan Thiet has made fish sauce for generations, and some families still ferment anchovies and sea salt in tall wooden barrels for a year or more. Your guide asks a family house to let you in, explains each stage from salting to the first draw, and you taste the difference between grades. Buy a bottle if you like it, or buy nothing: we have no arrangement with any producer.

Ta Cu Mountain

The cable car lifts you over the forest to the pagodas near the top of the 649-metre mountain, the first of them built by a monk in the 1870s. A short walk further lies the 49-metre reclining Buddha, one of the longest in Vietnam. It is cooler up here than on the coast, which is why this is the late-morning stop.

Fairy Stream

A shallow stream running between banks of red sand and white clay, worn into small canyons and spires. You walk it barefoot, ankle-deep, as far as you like, and your shoes wait in the car. It is the coolest thing to do in the early afternoon.

The big dunes: pale sand rolling for kilometres between freshwater lakes. A 4×4 jeep takes you up to the high ridge, and your guide times it so you are on top as the sun goes down and the sand turns gold. An ATV ride is optional; if you want one, your guide books a reputable operator and you pay on the spot.

Questions before you book
About the day
How long is the tour and when does it start?
It runs About 11.5 hours door to door, with pickup at 07:00 in Mui Ne, 06:30 in Phan Thiet. The tour is private, so the start can move: tell us when you would like to begin and we plan the day around sunset on the white dunes.
Where do you pick us up?
At your own hotel, anywhere in Mui Ne, Ham Tien or Phan Thiet, with no meeting point to reach on your own. Hotels in Tien Thanh and NovaWorld Phan Thiet carry a small transfer surcharge, shown at checkout; for Ke Ga or further out, message us for a quote. Your guide waits in the lobby for 20 minutes.
How much walking is there?
Short walks on paths at the Cham towers and on Ta Cu, about an hour barefoot in shallow water at Fairy Stream, and a climb in soft sand at the red dunes. At the white dunes the jeep takes you to the top, and anyone who would rather sit a stop out can wait in the car.
Can we change the route or the pace?
Yes. This is a sample day and every part of it can be adjusted: add a stop, skip one, or spend longer on the white dunes. Tell us before you book and we confirm the plan and an all-inclusive price in writing.
Does the guide speak good English?
Yes. Your guide is a licensed local who speaks fluent English and explains the customs and the story behind each stop, from the Cham towers to the fish sauce barrels, as you go.
Booking and practicalities
Is the price per person or for the whole group?
For the whole group, from one to four guests: four people pay less each than two, and the car is the same car. Children under 5 travel free and do not count towards the group size; from 5 a child counts as one guest. Groups of five or more travel in a larger vehicle — message us for a quote.
How do I pay, and when?
Two ways: pay the full price online by card, or pay a 30% deposit online and the rest in cash on the day of the tour, in US dollars or Vietnamese dong. We can also send a secure payment link on WhatsApp. The booking is confirmed once the online payment goes through, and your pickup time and guide’s name arrive in writing.
Can I cancel or reschedule?
Yes — free cancellation up to 3 days before departure for a full refund, and free rescheduling subject to availability. Within 3 days of departure, 30% of the tour price is charged because the car and guide are already committed.
What should I bring, and do I need cash?
Sunglasses, a hat, sun cream and shoes you can slip off at Fairy Stream, plus something that covers shoulders and knees for the pagodas on Ta Cu. You do not need cash at any gate, since every ticket is bought for you; bring cash for an ATV ride or shopping, or if you chose to pay the balance in cash to your guide.
What if it rains or the wind is strong?
Mui Ne is one of the driest corners of Vietnam. From May to October a short afternoon shower is possible; the dunes stay open in light rain, and if heavy rain is forecast we move the dune stops to the driest hours or change the date free of charge.
